Britain minister promotes "Grow your own" food plan
Thought you might find this interesting. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/8440863.stm"The government's 20-year food strategy includes making land available for people to grow their own food and more healthy cooking courses. Minister Hilary Benn said shoppers had led the push for free-range eggs and could do the same for sustainable food."

In many ways, the British have always remained more grounded in reality, so this isn't surprising. You'll never see that here in the US until it's way too late. The FedGov wouldn't dare do anything like this, as it would ruin their Hollywood image of everything being "Fine."

Yep.
That's why we gotta do it ourselves. Whether its through prepping or telling someone its a new way of "going green"; The more people we get growing their own the better off we will be.

Re: Britain minister promotes "Grow your own" food plan
The British are surely ahead of the US in this area, I suppose we don't want to admit there could be food scarcity in our future. Having a plan is the first step.
Britain only ended W.W. II imposed food rationing in the 1950's, so it is still a part of their populations personal experience, the threat is still real to them. For most Americans food scarcity is not even considered a possibility.
During W.W.II the very successful US victory garden program was initially fought by government. The government finally flip-flopped and took credit when it was clear that people were going to do it anyway, and it would not cost much. Government support and control, amounted to little more than printing posters, probably a good thing, ha. In California I believe that victory gardens produced something like 40 percent of all vegetables grown there in the war years.
The British have used small common garden plots for some time, to great advantage, while they are mostly hobby gardens, they are very productive. Their new plan appears to support increasing this way to improve food production along with reducing waste. It is no secret that Britain has only about a 3 day supply of food within the country at any one time, mostly imported, this subject has been raised by several in parliament, and I am sure it is one of the reasons for this plan to improve their food security. The concept of small community garden plots is common throughout western Europe, and something we should learn from.
We in the US face the same threat as Britain, only we haven't acknowledged just how vulnerable our food supply really is. If the food supply were interrupted here, the stores would be empty within a few days.
I would personally encourage everyone to have a garden if at all possible, even if it is just a few containers. The point would be to obtain knowledge (when and what to plant), to have something to scale up if needed. Simply storing a can of seeds is not a workable plan.
